AI for defense

Recent data show that a significant amount of investment in many countries is spent on artificial intelligence in the defense sector. It is no secret that AI has infiltrated various sectors of civilian industry, but the application of such modern technology to military applications is innovative and promising.

Military AI-enabled devices are capable of processing huge amounts of data in seconds. The defense sector has found many applications for them.

AI models are already being used by the Navy and the U.S. Army to create models that can help the military learn how to operate different combat systems that can be used in real military operations. AI-assisted virtual reality techniques also help create highly effective, accurate, and dynamic training simulations. And soldiers can greatly benefit from such training programs.

AI is widely used in surveillance. Artificial intelligence systems combined with geospatial analysis can extract useful data from related devices, which include radar and autonomous identification systems. This information helps detect illegal activity, suspicious activities, and other incomprehensible changes in time, and alert the appropriate authorities. AI-assisted robots and computer vision systems can also help with target recognition and classification.

A separate area of application of AI in the defense sphere is cybersecurity. In today’s world, cyberspace is becoming the third front of the war, so a hacked network can seriously threaten the security of individual regions and even the entire country. AI systems effectively protect against unplanned intrusions.

AI-enabled technologies are already being used in the creation of new-age weapons. In particular, advanced missiles can assess the necessary targets and determine the points of impact without any human involvement at all.

Of course, implementing AI-based technologies in defense requires appropriate financial and expert investments. And the ability of different countries to finance the infrastructure for creating such technologies varies greatly.
